ElectRA 2300SX

Hailed as the ‘Tug of the Future’, the ground-breaking electric-powered ElectRA Series of harbour tugs is the first of a new generation of emissions-free tugboats from Sanmar Shipyards that will have a major impact on cutting emissions in any busy harbour they work in.

ElectRA tugs, available in a range of sizes and power outputs, are the result of Sanmar’s ongoing collaboration with Canadian naval architects Robert Allan Ltd (RAL) and battery energy storage company Corvus Energy to build low and no-emission tugs utilising alternative fuels and innovative technological advances to protect the environment and build a sustainable tug and towing industry.

Proving that zero-emission propulsion is no longer a future aspiration, but a fully viable solution that can be achieved with no loss of power or performance, the tugs in this exclusive to Sanmar series can be carefully customized for individual customers’ specific needs, with capacities carefully tuned to each vessel’s unique load profile.

As is traditional with RAL designs, each version of the ElectRA is denoted by its LOA in metres, with the series at present comprising five variants – the 1900SX, 2200SX, 2300SX, 2500SX and 2800SX – with ESS battery bank capacities ranging from 1.718 kWh to 6.102 kWh and bollard pulls ranging from 40 to 84 tonnes.

The tugs reduce emissions of CO2 by approximately 10,000 tonnes per annum compared to diesel powered alternatives, with major reductions of NOX, SOX, CO, and particulate matter as well. Battery propulsion also makes them exceptionally quiet, both on board and in terms of underwater radiated noise, further enhancing their eco and marine and wildlife-friendly credentials.

The entire range is outfitted to a very high standard of accommodation, with spacious dedicated cabins and ensuites for all regular crew, all with natural light, and well in excess of regulatory standards.
