This Specification describes the general requirements of a new Class of high-performance terminal support and escort tug designated as the RAstar3400 design.
RAstar Class tugs have been developed to offer truly superior ship-handling and sea keeping performance at exposed terminal locations, docking and escorting ships in more extreme sea-states than is the norm. The unique sponsoned hull form provides proven dramatic reductions in roll amplitude and accelerations, in comparison to more conventional hull forms.
RAstar Class tugs are of robust, all-welded steel construction, with scantlings in excess of the minimums of Classification Society design rules.
The tugs will support an expansion of LNG facilities at Ports. The tugs are to assist very large ships in berthing and departing from berths, and to escort these ships through a narrow channel which experiences extreme weather conditions, with wave heights up to 3 metres and wind speeds of over 40 knots. Due to these extreme operating conditions, special attention has been paid to vessel design and in particular the bow fendering and towing equipment.
The RAstar3400 is intended as a dedicated terminal and harbour support tug, working off a forward towing winch, but can also be equipped for coastal towing and offshore emergency towing with heavy duty towing winch and towpins aft.
The tug shall be fully outfitted for safe and efficient performance of the following tasks:
- External fire-fighting including waterspray and Fi-Fi 1
- Oil spill response/oil recovery (some necessary equipment shall be provided by Owner)
The vessel is equipped with automation and instrumentation for normal duty operations with a minimum crew, and a periodically unmanned engine room.

North European Standards in Comfort and Quality. Heated floors on WC’s. Cabins with plugs for TV and GSM Aerials, teak imitating IMO approved floor meterial. Sound levels at apprx. %80 engine load are below 60 dB in cabins and below 70 dB in wheelhouse, corridors and mess room.
